Oncology Rehabilitation

As a person living with or beyond cancer, you face many challenges. Rehabilitation can make a sizeable difference. As you undergo treatment or recover from treatment, our team of rehabilitation specialists at Miami Valley Hospital will develop a plan of care that meets your individual needs, supporting you throughout your cancer journey.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a skilled rehabilitation service that can address functional limitations, which may affect your quality of life. Physical therapy may help improve:

  • Chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy
  • Cancer-related fatigue
  • Impaired mobility
  • Impaired balance
  • Dizziness
  • Joint pain
  • Pelvic pain and incontinence

Some chemotherapy medications can cause peripheral neuropathy, including dizziness, numbness, tingling, and weakness. Our specially trained physical therapists can help you improve your mobility and strength, reducing your fall risk.

Cancer-related fatigue is another side effect of cancer treatments and cancer itself. Your physical therapist can work with you to help improve fatigue by addressing strength deficits, endurance, and sleeping habits through different therapeutic techniques focused on energy conservation.

Those with pelvic cancer may experience bladder and/or bowel incontinence or pelvic pain and may benefit from treatment with our highly trained pelvic health therapists. These therapists assist with pelvic floor muscle retraining and coordination, implement various manual techniques, and help develop individualized exercise programs to alleviate symptoms.

Occupational Therapy

Occupation therapy is a skilled rehabilitation service that can assist you in your activities of daily living, allowing you to maintain your independence as much as possible. Occupational therapy can help improve your ability to perform tasks such as dressing, bathing, and preparing meals.

Speech-Language Pathology

Speech therapy is a skilled rehabilitation service that helps those living with and beyond cancer to manage communication and swallowing. Treatments may include:

  • Rehabilitation of swallowing and eating after cancer treatments such as surgery and radiation therapy
  • Laryngectomy management
  • Cognitive therapy to improve memory, concentration, and recall
